I recently read and provided feedback to a book titled Cortisol Clarity written by Dr Mehmet Yildiz who is author of multiple books, a cognitive scientist, and an executive consultant in the healthcare industry. After reading the manuscript and listening to it in my Google Play, I decided to write a review highlighting what I learned from the book.

Cortisol, often branded as the “stress hormone,” is much more than just a hormonal drama queen. It’s like the body’s emergency alert system, gearing us up to face challenges by flooding us with energy and temporarily putting non-essential functions — like digestion and immunity — on pause during moments of acute stress.

While this life-saving mechanism works wonders in the short term, chronic cortisol elevation can lead to some not-so-cute side effects, like weight gain, fatigue, and mental health hiccups.

Unlike more straightforward hormones — like insulin, which plays the role of the sugar police, or melatonin, the bedtime fairy — cortisol is at the crossroads of pretty much every critical physiological and psychological system.

That’s why it’s essential to view cortisol not just as a hormone, but as a window into how we live, think, and (try to) adapt.

Why Cortisol is Unique and Tricky

Multifaceted Role

At its core, cortisol is the body’s chief alarm system, kicking into gear when things get tough. It’s like a personal hype man, mobilizing glucose for energy, boosting focus, and putting the brakes on less crucial tasks like digestion or immune function during stress.

However, when the alarm never turns off, it throws the body’s balance into chaos, triggering chronic stress and a parade of health problems.

Elevated cortisol can mess with memory, cloud judgment, and stoke anxiety — creating a vicious cycle of constant stress.

On the flip side, low cortisol (think burnout or PTSD) can leave people feeling completely wiped out and unmotivated.

Influence of Modern Life

Unlike other hormones that respond to clear-cut triggers, cortisol is like the world’s most adaptable hormone. It reacts to nearly everything in modern life: emotional challenges, exercise, sleep patterns, and even things like noise or too much screen time.

Our 24/7 connected world — full of deadlines, notifications, and social pressures — keeps cortisol levels perpetually on high alert, something our ancestors couldn’t even fathom.

This makes cortisol the hormone equivalent of a bridge, connecting our body, brain, and the pressures of modern living.

Circadian Rhythm

Cortisol also follows a daily rhythm: it peaks in the morning to help us rise and shine, then tapers off at night to prepare us for rest.

But don’t be fooled — it’s very picky about its schedule. Disruptions from erratic sleep patterns, late-night screen binges, or shift work can throw this rhythm off track, leading to everything from insomnia to chronic fatigue.

Restoring this rhythm is essential for getting cortisol (and your life) back in balance.

Broader Impacts and Interconnections

Cortisol doesn’t just stay in its lane — it has a finger in every bodily pie.

It plays off insulin to regulate blood sugar, teams up with leptin and ghrelin to influence appetite, and even impacts thyroid and reproductive hormones, affecting everything from metabolism to fertility.

Plus, cortisol plays a starring role in immune and inflammatory responses, which links it to conditions like autoimmune disorders and cardiovascular disease. Learning about the HPA Axis and complex nervous system in simple words was a bonus for my education.

Taming cortisol imbalances can bring better health by addressing these interconnected systems.

For the Fat Losers (Yes, I’m Talking to You)

Let’s talk about results. After reading the first draft of Cortisol Clarity, I didn’t just walk away with a newfound respect for cortisol — I also shed 10 pounds.

And no, it wasn’t just the “I-forgot-to-eat” pounds, but real visceral fat. It’s like Dr. Yildiz’s book gave my cortisol a little pep talk and told it to start being more polite.

Now, I’m not saying the book itself melted the fat away — though that would be a great marketing pitch — I’m saying that once I understood how cortisol was secretly sabotaging my waistline, I got my act together.

It was like finally learning that the villain in your favorite movie wasn’t the creepy guy in the corner, but that one sneaky hormone you didn’t even know existed.

And just like that, the fat started to disappear, without even having to go on some crazy crash diet or join the latest “miracle” fitness trend. I got it checked with a DEXA scan to ensure after my belly shrank 3 inches.

So, if you’re looking for a good read and a little cortisol-induced weight loss motivation, Cortisol Clarity is your ticket to a leaner, happier you. And trust me, your belly fat will thank you after it turns into brown fat as Dr Yildiz beautifully articulated in a story.

But turning my white fat into brown fat felt like a scene from a sci-fi movie — kind of exciting but also a little terrifying. Getting used to cold showers in the morning? Let’s just say I wasn’t exactly jumping into the Arctic Ocean.

And replacing my beloved Red Bull with… well, anything that wasn’t Red Bull? Let’s just say my taste buds filed a formal complaint. It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, but hey, my metabolism’s thanking me now!
